Dublin City Marathon 2011

Congratulations to Dermot Redmond, one of the Duty Managers in our sister Hotel, the 4* Grand Hotel, Malahide, who ran the Dublin City Marathon on Monday, 31st October 2011 in aid of both the Down Syndrome Association of Ireland and Loyola House Wexford Bus Appeal.

Dermot would like to thank all those that sponsored him sincerely. With your help, a total of €3,100 was raised. This would have been impossible without your kind help and support, of which he is very grateful.

Pictured here is Dermot presenting a cheque to the C.W.C.W. Workshop in Co. Wexford. In the background, is the mini-bus purchased by the workshop for the clients of Loyola House, one of whom is Dermot's youngest brother. This shall be used to take clients to and from daily activities, with their lives greatly enhanced by such a service.

The Committee provides a forum for An Garda Síochána, the Local Authority Members, Oireachtas Members and community interests, to get together in a regular and structured manner.

At public meetings of the J.P.C., an opportunity is provided for local residents to make observations and address questions to the members of the J.P.C. on matters relating to crime and anti-social behaviour, with a view to improving public safety within their local community.

Sutton is a regular contestant in the Tidy Towns Competition.

In the recent report from the judges, it was noted that, "The Marine Hotel gives an uplift to the area around Sutton Cross not only for its appearance but also for its use of landscaping to improve the surroundings".

Dublin City Marathon 2011

Dermot Redmond, one of the Duty Managers in our sister Hotel, the 4* Grand Hotel, Malahide, shall be running in the Dublin City Marathon on Monday, 31st October 2011.

With your help, he is hoping to raise money for two causes very close to his heart, namely the Down Syndrome Association of Ireland and Loyola House Wexford Bus Appeal.

Dermot comes from a large family of five brothers, the youngest of whom, Paul, has Down Syndrome.

Paul resides in Loyala House, Co. Wexford, a supported residential unit, who are at present in need of a mini-bus to take clients to and from daily activities. The lives of these clients would be greatly enhanced by such a service.

Any support however small would be greatly appreciated by Dermot and the causes he is hoping to support.

Santa Sabina Spring Fair 2011

Santa Sabina, Sutton would like to invite you to their Annual Spring Fair in aid of Trócaire, which will take place on Sunday, 8th May 2011 from 11:30am until 2:30pm.

They are busy making preparations for what promises to be a fantastic family day out. Events will include a bouncy castle, lots of games and second hand stalls, an art auction, a raffle and face painting. There will also be a fantastic barbecue, along with other tantalizing food and refreshments.

Dublin band Key West will be playing in the school at this year’s Spring Fair. Tickets for the gig cost €5 and all proceeds will go to Trócaire.

The school are currently collecting the following items and would be grateful if you could contribute in any way. All donations may be dropped into the school during the day:

Declan Rothwell Brings Psychocalisthenics to Marine Hotel

Declan Rothwell is a certified trainer in Psychocalisthenics who has been teaching in Ireland for almost 20 years. The approach was developed in the 1950's by Bolivian meditation teacher Oscar Ichazo as revitalising exercises to do after long periods of meditation.

Psychocalisthenics is a series of 23 movement / breathing exercises that awaken every muscle group in the body. They take 15 minutes to perform, giving you lots of extra energy and awareness. Each exercise has a precise movement and breathing pattern that promotes anti-aging, vital energy into all your organs, glands, and tissues, making you happy and alert.

Declan Rothwell shall give a 1-day course in Psychocalisthenics on Saturday, 16th April 2011 from 10am until 5pm here in the Marine Hotel, Sutton. The cost shall be €95.

Dublin Bay Prawn Festival at Howth - April 2011

The Dublin Bay Prawn Festival shall take place in Howth Village from Friday, 1st April 2011 to Sunday, 3rd April 2011.

It shall be a weekend packed with lots of fun and food delights.

The Dublin Bay Prawn Festival will feature a food village packed with food stalls and tasting sessions with everything from top quality seafood to freshly sourced local foods from some of the region’s finest restaurants and artisans.

Other food events include cookery demonstrations, wine-tasting events and prawn-shelling competitions.

During the day there will be street entertainment and a programme of walks, talks and seaside antics.

As the sun goes down over Howth Harbour the fun continues as each evening the festival offers choices such as a Mystery Dine Around, Fireworks on the Harbour and in-house musical entertainment in Howth’s Pubs.

€450k in Technology Grants for Local Secondary Schools

Secondary schools in Dublin North East shall receive more than €450, 000 in technology grants from the Government in order to purchase computers, digital projectors and other I.T. equipment.

The grant each school shall received shall depend upon the number of students it has.

Each school shall receive a basic grant of €1,700 plus €63.45 per student.

Based on the enrolment figures published on the Department of Education’s website, the estimated amounts to be received by local schools in Sutton are as follows:

Minister for Fisheries visits Howth

The Minister for Fisheries, Sean Connick T.D., visited Howth harbour on Tuesday, 12th October 2010 to witness firsthand many of the issues affecting the fishing and marine community in the Howth and Sutton area.

He met with the Howth Sutton Community Council, the Harbourmaster, the Howth Boating and Sailing Club and seafood busineses located in the area. He also made short visits to many of the businesses on the West Pier.

The Minister showed a very impressive understanding of the challenges facing the fishing and marine communities nationally and dedicated a lot of time to learning about the specific issues in the area.

Positive Ageing Week 2010 runs from Friday, 24th September 2010 to Saturday, 2nd October 2010.

Positive Ageing Week is a festival which highlights the positive aspects of ageing and celebrates the contribution older people have made and continue to make to their communities.

The central aim of Positive Ageing Week is to dispel the many negative perceptions that surround ageing and to transform attitudes towards ageing and older people. We need to celebrate the fact that we are living longer, that ageing is not a burden but an opportunity.

Age Action coordinates Positive Ageing Week. Events and activities are organised by active retirement groups, local voluntary groups, nursing homes, libraries, commercial organisations and individual older people themselves.

This is the 8th year Age Action has marked UN International Day of Older Persons (1st October) and each year Positive Ageing Week has become bigger and better. Last year over 700-recorded events took place in 26 counties throughout the country and this year we are hoping for at least 850, including many from across the border.

In Sutton, an Introduction to Petanque shall take place on Wednesday, 29th September 2010 from 10am until 12:30pm in the Petanque Grounds of St. Ann's Park, Raheny. Petanque is an inexpensive and entertaining game for all ages to play. However, it is particularly suited for seniors. It is also known as FrenchBoule. It costs as little as €10 to buy a set of pleasure boule, and that is all you need to start. There are petanque grounds available at no charge in most public parks. At 10am, weather permitting, there will be an introduction to the game and a demonstration by experienced players. Between 10:30am and12:30pm those interested will be encouraged to play 15 minute games to see if they like Petanque. This event is open to all. The Irish Girl Guides is a uniquely girl-only, youth-driven, active and dynamic organisation. It offers a varied and exciting programme for girls and young women aged between 5 and 26 years of age.

There are currently places available for Ladybirds who are girls aged between 5 and 7 years of age; Brownies who are girls aged between 6 1/2 and 11 years of age; and Guides who are aged between 10 1/2 and 15 years of age.

Sutton's Dan Gill Becomes Youngest Ever GP Youth Champion

The GP14 Youth Championship 2010 was held at Sligo Yacht Club on Saturday, 24th July 2010 and Sunday, 25th July 2010 in fresh Force 3 to 4 westerly winds with young sailors from six different clubs vying for honours.

Senior sailors within the fleet loaned their boats to promising junior sailors from their home clubs in a bid to demonstrate the appeal of the class.

Dan Gill, from Sutton Dinghy Club, became the youngest ever winner of the GP14 Youth Championship of Ireland with a race to spare. Well done, Dan!

Confirmed Whale Sighting off Howth

There has been a confirmed sighting of a humpback whale in waters off Howth Head, Co. Dublin.

The animal, believed to be an adult, was photographed on Thursday, 15th July 2010 within metres of the Cardinal marker, between Howth Harbour and Ireland's Eye.

The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group says it is the first sighting of a humpback in the eastern Irish Sea for 20 years and one of only a handful of validated recordings in Irish waters in the past century.

Congratulations to the 8 ladies from the Sutton Floral Art Group, which includes Sandra Finnegan (Floral Designer - Grand Hotel) from Sutton, who won Gold and Best in Category for their 5 part exhibition entitled Elements of Nature at this year's Bord Bia Bloom festival in the Phoenix Park, Dublin. Sandra contributed the Water Element.

Bloom, Ireland’s largest gardening, food and family event, returned to the Phoenix Park for the June Bank Holiday weekend for 5 days.

This year’s event included over 20 spectacular showgardens, 50 floral displays and a large scale artisan farmers market.

Sutton Dinghy Club's First Annual Sponsored Sail on Saturday, 3rd July 2010 shall raise vital funds for a new rescue boat and junior training equipment.

The Sponsored Sail will follow a 10km route from the Dinghy Club, down the creek to Dinghy Supplies on the Dublin Road and back.

Sailing will take place between 3pm and 6 pm and will be followed by a BBQ and live music at the clubhouse.

Free Rail Scheme on Track for Older Visitors

From Tuesday, 16th March 2010, all overseas visitors aged 66 or over, from anywhere in the world, shall be able to benefit from free unlimited travel on mainline, DART and commuter trains in the scheme, developed by Fáilte Ireland in conjunction with Iarnród Éireann.

Travelling to the Marine Hotel, Sutton will now be free!

The scheme was announced by the Government as part of the budget in December 2009, in a bid to increase overseas visitor numbers. It is similar to the free travel scheme for Irish people aged 66 and over, but does not include free bus or Luas travel.

The scheme is initially for a fixed 1-year period, but shall be subject to review and is expected to continue indefinitely if the demand is there.

Tourists can access the scheme by visiting the Fáilte Ireland website, www.discoverireland.com, to arrange for a Golden Trekker reservation. They will be asked for details such as their date of birth and passport or national identity card number. Their Golden Trekker reservation can then be used to book their free Golden Trekker tickets when they arrive in Ireland.

Tickets can be purchased in blocks of four days, depending on the length of stay. A 4-day unlimited ticket is normally worth €100.

Visitors who do not pre-book the reservation can also avail of the scheme when they arrive in Ireland, by calling to a Fáilte Ireland tourist information office.

Matthew Ryan Completes 2 Years as I.H.F. President

Matthew Ryan, Managing Director of both the Marine Hotel, Sutton and Grand Hotel, Malahide, successfully completed his two year period as President of the Irish Hotels Federation in March 2010.

Mr. Ryan presided over the annual conference in Galway before handing over to his successor, Paul Gallagher of Buswell’s Hotel, Dublin.

During his two years at the helm of the I.H.F., Mr. Ryan helped steer the industry through a very difficult economic cycle. Achievements included revision to the J.L.C. regulations; allowing V.A.T. to be claimed back by overseas conference organisers; free rail for overseas visitors; commissioning of the Peter Bacon Report on the Hotel Industry; and of course constant representation of the Hotel sectors interests to both government and public bodies.

Fingal Hotels Join Together

Almost 20 Hotels, including the Grand Hotel, Malahide and Marine Hotel, Sutton, have signed-up to the Dublin Fingal Hotels Group to help promote the region to tourists, business travellers and Dublin residents over the coming years.

The initiative is co-ordinated by Fingal Tourism and facilitated by Fingal County Enterprise Board.

On a monthly basis, senior representatives from each Fingal hotel shall meet to discuss and implement plans to help attract more visitors and hence business to the region.

Getting the DART to the Marine Hotel? Please note that as of Sunday, 29th November 2009, a range of service changes have taken effect. In a major review of DART schedules, a new regular 15-minute interval service is to be introduced across the full day (Monday to Saturday), with additional services operating at peak times (Monday to Friday) to match demand. The regular interval service will eliminate occasional significant gaps in service at off-peak times, and give an easily understandable pattern of services through the day for customers.

Fingal SPCA

The Fingal Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was established in January 2009, when a group with lots of experience in the area of animal welfare came together to provide a rescue service for cats and dogs, and indeed all animals. They also rehabilitate injured animals.The six-strong committee is assisted in its work by a dozen or so kind, dedicated volunteers who provide shelter to the animals the organisation rescues.

The organisation is currently looking for caring homes to welcome adult cats or nervous kittens into their families. Anybody who wishes to help or make a donation to the Fingal SPCA should please contact 018436477.
